Traditional wedding ceremonies are filled with symbolic practices to honour the union of the couple, as well as their families. The ‘Sang Kheh Umm’ is the female master of ceremony that leads the bride through a series of traditional Peranakan wedding customs. ‘Pak Chindek’, on the other hand, is the male master of ceremony who guides the groom.
As part of the custom, the ‘Sang Kheh Umm’ uses symbolic objects to remind the bride of her dos and don’ts. For example, she is given a scale to weigh her actions, a pair of scissors to make all things equal for husband and wife, a razor as a reminder to be cautious, and a mirror to always tell the good from the bad.
