‘Wau Bulan’ attributes its name to its crescent-shaped tailpiece that resembles a rising crescent moon when flown. These kites are one the most beautiful traditional kites in the world and they have been flown for hundreds of years. They are a remarkable tradition intrinsic to the Malay culture.
They extend about 3.5 meters from nose to tail, with a wing span of 2.5 meters. There are also some that are known to be even bigger. With their majestic size, they are capable of reaching heights of more than 450m on a strong, windy day. They are richly decorated with colourful designs of flowers and leaves. The blank spaces on each side are called eyes, and they are said to guide the kite in flight.
