The population of Sabah is made up of 33 aboriginal groups in total, of which, 30% is Kadazan-Dusun. This makes them the largest aboriginal tribe in the state. They are predominantly cultivators of wet-rice and hill-rice. Thus, making the Harvest Festival one of their most important celebrations.
It is on this day, that they honour the Rice Spirit in gratitude for a healthy and generous harvest. Ancient belief has it that everything has life – rocks, trees and rivers included. From time to time, these souls and spirits must be appeased.
